Milwaukee has an unusually high infant mortality rate. The national average for infant deaths is around 6 per 1,000 live births, while Milwaukee’s average infant deaths is around 10 per 1,000 live births. Milwaukee infant deaths make up about a quarter of the infant deaths in the state of Wisconsin. Co-sleeping (when an individual sleeps next to an infant in bed and accidentally suffocates them) is one of the major causes of the high infant mortality rate in Milwaukee.
Stork & Company of Wisconsin, a Wisconsin non-profit founded in 2014 by a Franklin High School student, Meena Nutbeam, works to reduce the infant mortality rate in the Milwaukee area, by distributing Finnish Style baby boxes. These provide a safe sleeping environment for infants, and are given away throughout the Milwaukee area and Wisconsin. Stork & Co. is partnered with other non-profits, hospitals, and organizations in the Milwaukee area. Recently, Stork & Co. became a Guidestar bronze participant. Guidestar is an information service that reports on non-profits in the U.S.
The 2016 Annual Report was just released on the Stork & Co website. Over 1900 diapers were given away in the diaper drive, and 567 baby boxes were given away in 2016.
As Stork & Co. grows, it needs more and more volunteers. Volunteering for Stork & Co. is a great way to give back to the community.
