Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Byrne

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of the most well-known teachers in the school,  Mrs. Byrne. You can typically find her teaching gym classes, dancing, and telling fun stories. Read on to learn more about this amazing teacher!

What is your educational background?

I have a bachelors of science of education from Central Michigan University and I majored in physical education and health.  I also minored in dance, chemistry, and cultural anthropology.  I have a Masters of science in community health services from Stritch University and a masters equivalent in biomechanics and motor control.

What is your favorite food?

I am a foodie and enjoy organic locally sourced food.

What is your favorite FHS memory so far?

I have many and record my favorites in a book called teachable moments.

What is something that people might not know about you?

I was a healthcare administrator before teaching.  Also, I danced professionally with the Martha Graham dance company.

How do you spend your time outside of school?

I am a community activist for all forms of human rights and social justice

What is your best advice for high school students?

Be in the moment and practice mindfulness.

Do you have any crazy stories?

I suppose you can talk about how I busted a meth lab.  I was mountain biking one day and saw a run down house up in the mountains so I called the police.  It turned out that the run down house was a meth lab and I was involved in busting it.

Some other fun facts

  • In 1980, I started teaching but then left for a few years to take part in the healthcare and wellness movement. A little while later, I came back in 1988 and have been teaching ever since.
  • I have been married for 38 years and have a 22 year old daughter.
  • I am one of the oldest faculty members in the school.
