Current Events

While you were away enjoying your Christmas break and sleeping in ūüôā many important events happened while you were away on break.¬† Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the second highest earning movie of all time in North America, the Packers lost to the Vikings but advance to the playoffs, and Saudi¬†Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran. Additionally, the¬†CES (Consumer Electronic Show) takes place this week.

Sports News

The Packers played the Minnesota Vikings this past weekend for the division title and lost to the Vikings with a score of 20-13.  This week was the last week of the regular season.  The Packers finished the regular season with a record of 10 wins and 6 losses.  Even with the loss, the Packers will advance to the playoffs as a wildcard and play the Washington Redskins on the road next Sunday.  Teams that advanced to the playoffs from the NFC are the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, and Seattle Seahawks.  Teams from the AFC that are advancing to the playoff are the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bangles, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The playoffs begin next weekend.

Entertainment News

Since it’s release on December 18th, Star¬†Wars: The Force Awakens has made over 1.5 billion dollars worldwide¬†in¬†just a half a month and around $740 million just in North America.¬† The movie has passed Titanic($658.7 million), Jurassic World($652.3 million), The Avengers($623.4 million) to make it the second highest earning movie in North America.¬† The next goal for the movie is passing the current record holder Avatar($760.5 million).¬† If you think that Star Wars is going to die down any time soon then you’re wrong.¬† The movie has yet to open in China on January 9th, the world’s second highest movie market.¬† In other Star Wars news, the voice actor who voiced Boba Fett, Jason Wingreen, died on Christmas Day at the age of 95.

Technology News

CES(Consumer Electronic Show) starts this week in Las Vegas. ¬†For those who don’t know what CES is, it’s a technology trade show which allows major companies to show off all of the products that they will be working on in 2016. ¬†Major companies like Google, Sony, and Ford will all be in attendance showing off their new innovations for the upcoming year. Major topics that companies will cover at this year’s CES convention are virtual reality, connected cars, wearables, and drones. ¬†It will be exciting to see what companies will be working on in this upcoming year. ¬†In other technology news, Apple has recently reported it’s lowest quarter earnings since 2008.

World News

Saudi Arabia recently cut its diplomatic ties with Iran this past week over a execution of a Shiite cleric. ¬†Saudi Arabia executed 47 people including the cleric for charges related to terrorism. ¬†Hours after the announcement of the execution, Iranians began to attack Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran. ¬†The Saudis then made the decision to cut all diplomatic relationships with Iran and have suspended all flights to Iran. ¬†As this story develops, more countries are starting to weight in. ¬†Russia and China, two big super powers in the region, have both issued statements hoping that both sides can remain calm and prevent the situation from escalating. ¬†This is a developing situation.
