Girls Swim and Dive Makes a Splash this Season

All of the hard work that the girls swim and dive team has been putting in, has paid off allowing the team to qualify to go to state! Their amazing season started in mid-August with summer practices Monday through Friday 7-10 am. The team did cardio and muscle strengthening exercises and then headed into the pool for the remainder of practice. Once school started, the team continued practicing for three hours every day after school. The tough practice schedule got the team ready for their meets.
Girls swim and dive won five meets and lost two. At their conference meet, many team members dropped their times significantly, including Sarah Kraus in the 50 freestyle and Maddie Koetting in the 200 freestyle. They continued to work hard throughout the season so that they could finish out on top. Although girls swim and dive was able to make it to state, they faced some difficulties during their season due to injuries. These injuries made it hard for the girls to swim at their full potential during a few meets. Overcoming this was hard but Tara Theissen, a senior on the team says, “Together, when we were all focused to swim, we were capable of great things.”
The weekend of November 13th the state meet was held at the UW- Madison Natatorium. The girls who competed at state and the categories that they swam in are as follows: 200 free relay: Ashley Bohne, Tara Theissen, Sam Wieland, and Grace Gavronski. 400 free relay: Ashley Bohne, Tara Theissen, Jordan Gawlitta, and Grace Gavronski. The 200 free relay at sectionals finished first and was guaranteed a spot at the state competition while the 400 free relay finished third but was among the top 18 relays in the state so they were able to go to state as well. At state, the 200 free relay placed 15th and the 400 free relay placed 16th.
Tara Theissen says, “Next year, I think you can expect the FHS girls swim and dive to be one of the best in the conference because they are only losing four seniors and are gaining good freshmen swimmers. I have a feeling they will be taking many events to state next year!” Congrats ladies on a fantastic season!
