Franklin High School is proud to announce a new addition to the list of sports offered at Franklin High School. Next school year, Quidditch will be officially added to the list of school supported sports offered. For those who aren’t familiar, Quidditch originated from the famous series of Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, and in the non-wizarding world, follows a few simple rules.
In Quidditch, the team’s players, the ‘chasers’, try to score points by kicking the ball, or the ‘quaffle’ into the goal hoops to score points. The goal hoops are defended by opposite players called ‘keepers’, as well as by the players called ‘beaters’, who attempt to take down the chasers by chucking dodgeballs, or the ‘bludgers’, at the chasers. Separately, a ‘seeker’ on each team tries to catch the ‘snitch’, the small flying ball which can win thirty points and end the game. But, since this isn’t the wizarding world, the ‘snitch’ is actually a person dressed in yellow who dashes back and forth across the field in an attempt to avoid capture. Oh, and, of course, all players must play the game with a broomstick placed firmly between their legs at all times whilst running (that is, until enough funds are raised to buy actual flying broomsticks).
Great care has gone into the creation of the Franklin High School Quidditch Team, including the specialized brooms that each player will receive, as well as for the flashy gold outfits each snitch will have the honor of sporting. Construction will hopefully be completed by next school year to include fields for Quidditch practice and tournaments, and anyone interested should make their way to Door 2 in the Office to make the short list of people who will be allowed to be part of the new FHS Quidditch team.
For anyone interested in the great game of Quidditch or how to get involved in its great community of players, I would highly suggest going to the International Quidditch Association for more information.
