Lunch Changes

20131204-080118.jpgRecently, Franklin Public School District has modified the school lunch program. Some would stay the changes are small, while others would disagree. Ever since the First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the USDA created a school lunch program to help stop adolescent obesity there have been “food fights” within schools all over the country. So is this new lunch program a positive or negative addition to schools?

While conversing with the lunch ladies, they revealed some interesting information about the lunches served here at FHS, especially with new items being added to follow the new guidelines in place by the USDA. Recently, students and teachers have noticed some new food items being introduced to the menu. These items include: Totchos, Chicken Stir-fry and even General Tso’s Orange Chicken. Why the different menu choices?

After speaking with one of the friendly lunch staff members, Diane Maegli-Hippert, she revealed, “we wanted to follow the new guidelines in place and decided to mix up the menu a little bit to go along with the changes.”

This revealed the students’ need for new appetizing courses. Students are very happy with the new lunch options and they seem to be going over very well. Not only are these new lunch choices delicious but they also provide the nutritious benefits from eating a well balanced meal.

Another gradual change to the lunch menu is the addition of the “chicken line.” Although the “chicken line” is not an official line, almost every day there is some food item containing chicken. Ranging from Chicken Noodle Soup to Chicken Tenders there is almost all the chicken varieties you can think of.

Mrs. Maegli-Hippert even stated that “the students really enjoy chicken as a lunch choice, it is very popular.”

Who would have known that chicken was one of the favorites at FHS? Chicken is very versatile and can be prepared in various ways. Also, chicken can be prepared in different low calorie ways, which makes up some of the reasons why chicken is loved so dearly!

These are just some of the many changes being made to the school lunch program. Lunch choices will now be much more diverse from the old tired lunch choices. These new choices will now have new hidden health benefits inside of them to keep up with the USDA demand for a well balanced meal. Keep up the good work FHS lunch staff. General Tso’s Orange Chicken is not a food. It should be separated into two different types of food; one being General Tso’s Chicken the other being Orange Chicken.

Risks can be good. Some of these new options are great, but unfortunately some need to be removed.
