The popular belief is that robotics is only for those who are skilled in designing and programming robots. That, however, is not the case. Robotics is a club interested in a variety of talents including, but not limited to, marketing, business, accounting, advertising, and graphic design. (See full list at end.) The club runs like a business to create a product, in this case a robot, that is taken to competition. “Students will work as a business raising funds, developing community contacts, designing a robot, building a robot, competing with a robot, providing community outreach and spreading the word about the program,” said Mr. Dicks. The team will head to Chicago, IL and Duluth, MN with their robot to compete this year, and, if they do well, they will also head to St. Louis, MS to participate in the international championships!
Robotics will not only be fun while you’re in the club, but will also benefit you in the future. It enables students get a real life experience of working in a business, using what they are currently learning or have already learned. They are also able to gain new skills not taught in high school that they might need later in college, the military, an apprenticeship, or the workforce. There are students who are currently working in machining and manufacturing, engineering, CAD drafting, and more at companies right in Franklin. Also, “Many colleges, and technical schools recognize robotics as being a valuable preparation piece for advanced training after high school and they notice applicants that have been part of a robotics team.” There are currently over 150 scholarship providers and 887 scholarship opportunities that are offered to students who are part of a robotics. These scholarships, not specifically for engineering, can reach a value of over $18,131,757!
You’re interested in Robotics? Saber Robotics meets on Tuesday nights from 6:30-8:00 until January. From January and on, the meetings will run from Monday to Thursday and on Saturdays. This is the build season where the team has to meet often to develop a competition ready robot. Competitions are not far from there, occurring during the months of March and April.
